The first question in consideration for breast augmentation is if you want to treat ptosis (dropping of the breast) or if you only want to increase the size of your breast. Ptosis can be treated with augmentation alone, if the patient is willing to accept the low position of the nipple‐areolar complex on the breast. However, if the nipple‐areolar complex is to be elevated then a Mastopexy (Breast Lift) will need to be combined with the augmentation.
At Premier Plastic Surgery Associates, we stress natural enhancement of the breasts staying within the body habitus (build) of the patient. Implants that are too large for the breast cause significant problems later, which include rippling of the skin from overstretching, visible implants beneath thin, stretched skin and deformation of the rib cage. We use the base width of the skin to determine the range of sizes for breast implants and the thickness of the skin and breast tissue to determine where the implants are placed (above or below the muscle).
